Daniel looked up from the wooden horse he had been carving in his lap when he felt the brush of something in his hair. A chuckle escaped his lips when he saw the look in the other’s eyes, and realized almost instantly what she had done. “It will fall out, you know.” He warned, reaching into his pocket for a little string to give to her if she wished to tie it in.

"He’s going to love it." She giggled and sat down beside him. "It’s gorgeous, Daniel. Is it for me?" She asked with a happy look on her face.

"Of course it is." He nodded. "Who else do I know with the same love for them that I hold?" Daniel chuckled softly as he watched her look over the tiny statue.

Regina giggled at his comment. “But it will look fabulous while it’s in.” She teased as she took the string and tied the flower to a lock of his hair. “There. Perfect.”

"I’m sure Rocinante will be pleased." He chuckled, knowing the moment that her horse noticed the flower, he would attempt to eat it while it was still attached to his hair. "There… all finished." He handed her the small wooden horse, leaning back as he grinned at her.

"Daniel!" She could barely contain herself as she practically fled the large manor with only one goal in mind- making it to the stables, and by extension, Daniel’s arms. It was the only safe place she knew, and she could not stand to be with her mother and them a moment longer. Even with the near constant abuse of her mother, Regina had never learned to hate anyone.
Until now.
The time she had spent with the stable boy, even when he was nothing more than a comforting shadow, had been the best of her life. He was the person in her life who she could trust implicitly. He never asked to much of her, and he cared about the things she wanted in life. Not once had Daniel hurt her, in fact, he was the one who kept her safe and helped to console her after her mother’s punishments. He was an angel, and she didn’t want to think how her life would be without him.
Which is exactly what made this all the harder. Of all the things her mother had done, this was easily the worst. All she had done was save the girl from a horse without thinking of the possible consequences. It wasn’t as if she could stand back, do nothing and allow the girl to die when she could save her. Regina never thought she would come to regret that moment as much as she did now. The king- a man old enough to be her grandfather had asked her to marry him. She was only a few years older than his daughter- and she did not love him. Her mother had accepted while she stood there, trying not to let her shock {and her disgust} show. Right now, she needed Daniel.
Regina flew into his arms, violent sobs wracking her body. She held tighter to him that she had before, calming after a few moments of inhaling the familiar scent of leather, horses, sweat and grass. A few moments in the arms that were so full of love and she began to calm down. A few moments more, and she was smiling. Until he pulled away and got down on one knee. She put her hands up to her mouth, tears spilling from her eyes for a completely different reason.
"Of course, Daniel." A beat, "Yes."

Daniel was up in an instant, arms back around the woman that he feared he’d made cry all over again, hands soothingly running over her back as a small kiss was placed on her cheek, then another on her lips as he slid the small gold ring onto her finger.
"Two weeks." He said after a moment of staring at it. "Two weeks is all I need, just to find a job… to get settled in a house for the both of us, and I will come back here for you." He said, the apology showing brightly in his eyes. He didn’t wish to leave her, but they left him no choice, especially with the little wages that Cora had been paying him these past few years. He could not allow her to be forced to sleep on the streets as he would for that time.
" Just stay here… wait for me here, for I will come back to these stables to wait for you when I am ready." He vowed and kissed her once again, though unlike the slight rush of the last kiss, this one was slower, as if he were attempting to memorize the feeling of her lips pressed against his.

"Regina!" Daniel called out the moment he saw her, seemingly flying from her house on a hill with tears shining on her cheeks. It was another fight, if they could even be called such.
Her mother, his boss, had hardly ever said more than two words at a time to him. But then, being the stable boy, that was likely the best gift he could receive from her. Yet, he could not help but to dislike her from the first few days of his arrival at their mansion, from the first time he had caught the girl who was now soon to be his fiance in her horses stall, silent sobs falling from her trembling lips. He’d fell for her that very day, two hours later when she’d noticed him as he attempted to tiptoe around her; yet, unlike her mother, the girl had seemed almost grateful even for his silent company.
Now they were here, in much the same situation, yet instead of hiding himself behind the wood as to not make her nervous, he welcomed her with open arms that held onto the woman he loved tightly, comfortingly. “I’m here.” He assured her, turning her so that he was between her and the house, as if the ghosts roaming inside it could not get to her past him.
This wasn’t exactly the setup he’d planned for his proposal… yet, after so many interruptions by both her new friend, a young girl named Snow White, and that very woman who had upset her enough for her to come running back to him, this seemed to be his only chance. So, once the tears calmed and a smile lit up that breathtaking face that had become the reason he traveled back here daily, he asked her while down on one knee, staring up at her hopefully as he prayed that Cora would not ruin this of all moments once more.
